Check Your Tires
One of the reasons so many of us stay off of the road during the snowy weather is due to snowy and icy conditions causing a problem with car handling. Your tires play a big part in how your vehicle performs on the icy roads and can be very dangerous if the tread is too worn, or the pressure is too low. The easiest way to check if your tires need to be replaced due to lack of tread is by using a penny! Stick a penny into your tire grooves and check to see where Lincoln’s head lies. If you can see most all of his head, you’ll want to get new tires at any time of the year, but especially for the winter. To check the pressure on your tires, you’ll first want to take a quick peek at the correct tire pressure for your vehicle on the sticker just inside your driverside door. You can add air at many gas stations now, but if you are unsure of how to put the correct amount in, or would rather bring it in, that’s no problem! At Len Stoler CDJR, we are happy to help with anything you need to get your car winter-ready.
Test Your Brakes
Like most vehicle parts, brakes have a lifespan that is contingent on how often they are used. Traffic in the summer can be heavy, and with all the stop and go your brakes can take a real hit. It’s important your brakes are working properly during winter, and also year-round! To see if your brakes may present a problem on the slippery surface of the snowy roads this winter, gently apply pressure while coming to a stop. If you hear or feel metal grinding on metal, it’s time to bring your vehicle in for a quick check-up on the brakes! We will give the whole system a thorough look, from brake pads to rotors and everything in between!
Windshield Wiper Wear and Tear
As the snow begins to fall, it’s important to make sure you have properly working windshield wipers to keep your visibility at maximum capacity while on the road. If you are noticing streaks across your windshield, or cracks in the rubber on your wipers, it’s time for new wipers! Another clue you need to start thinking about new wiper blades is when you start hearing a high pitch squeak as the blades make their way across the windshield, and of course, if they aren’t sliding across with ease but doing more of a repeated jump across, bring your vehicle into Len Stoler CDJR and let us have a look at what’s going on. Chances are if any of these problems are happening, you’ll need to replace the wiper blades, but don’t worry! It’s an easy fix for our service techs, and we will have you back out on the road in no time!
Get your Battery Checked
It’s a great idea to have your battery checked every couple of months, especially if you are having trouble starting up your car and it takes 2-3 times before the engine turns over. If this is happening to you, you want to get your battery checked! The life span of a car battery depends on many things, but during the winter the cold temperatures can alter the chemical balance of the liquid that makes your battery run smoothly and can be causing even more trouble starting up your vehicle. If you don’t know how to flush out the fluids and need help knowing what to look for to keep your battery’s health at 100%, bring your car down to our service station! We will happily take a look at it for you, and make sure you can tackle these winter roads safely.
