What engine does the 2022 Wagoneer lineup employ?
The Wagoneer lineup, Series II and Series III, features a 5.7L V8 engine. This powerful engine kicks out 392 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque. For maximum performance and fuel efficiency, it uses advanced mild-hybrid technology called eTorque. This system replaces the regular engine-mounted alternator with a belt-driven generator unit powered by a 48-volt battery pack. This provides a seamless engine start and stop. This electric generator additionally enhances throttle response by immediately providing 130 lb-ft of torque upon applying pressure to the gas pedal.
The Grand Wagoneer houses a 6.4L V8 for 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. The 6.4L V8 features a unique intake and exhaust manifold to set new standards for performance and power. Plenty of torque is available at low RPMs for excellent towing capability and an impressive 0-60 time of just six seconds. Cylinder deactivation saves on fuel by deactivating four of the eight cylinders when cruising on the highway or driving at low speeds. When the driver requests more power by pressing the gas pedal, the cylinders will automatically reactivate.
What transmission does the Wagoneer lineup use?
Both V8 engines are mated to a sturdy TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission. Engineers and designers of the Wagoneer chose the TorqueFlite transmission because it utilizes engine output for efficient power distribution during highway drives and for smooth gear shifts and proper torque distribution while driving on rugged terrain. The hybrid system for Wagoneer’s 5.7L V8 employs computer controllers to process engine data faster and make the necessary adjustments within the transmission. In addition, the Wagoneer’s clutch management system is refined for optimized shift times, torque responsiveness, and brake regeneration to provide a smoother ride with nearly seamless gear shifts. Lastly, the TorqueFlite transmission has more than 40 independent gear maps to optimize shift points and gear changes to provide better performance and maximize fuel efficiency.
What 4×4 systems does the Wagoneer lineup use?
The 2022 Wagoneer lineup is available with three of Jeep’s most iconic and capable 4×4 systems, Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II, with a rear ELSD. While all three systems provide unparalleled traction all-terrain capability, they each operate with slightly different components.
Quadra-Trac I offers full-time 4WD traction without any driver input from pushing a button or pulling a lever. The lightweight single-speed transfer case provides excellent fuel economy and traction by redistributing torque. When on dry roads, the torque will be distributed in a way to maximize fuel economy, when a loss of traction is detected, torque will be sent to the axle with the most traction.
Quadra-Trac II also employs torque redistribution but the torque is sent through a two-speed transfer case. This system also uses a network of high-tech sensors to detect wheel spin at the earliest possible moment and instantly react to combat it by sending up to 100% of available engine torque to the wheels with the best grip.
Quadra-Drive II with a rear electronic limited-slip differential (ELSD) provides an even higher level of traction. The system immediately detects slippage and redistributes torque automatically to counteract it. In some instances, the system will predict a loss of traction by monitoring throttle position and make the necessary adjustments to limit or prevent the slip.
Do the Wagoneer models come with a traction management system?
Of course! All Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer 4×4 variants come with Selec-Terrain traction management. With Auto, Sport, Snow, Sand/Mud, and available Rock modes, drivers can select a mode that best handles the terrain they’re driving on. Auto mode is the default setting and senses road conditions and makes the necessary adjustments to provide optimal traction and performance. Sport mode raises the transmission shift points, allowing for higher RPMs, and optimizes throttle control to provide fun on-road driving performance. Snow mode uses the traction control and 4×4 systems to maintain traction on snow-covered roads. Sand/Mud mode acts similarly by monitoring wheel spin and refining the differentials to redistribute torque when conditions require it. Finally, Rock mode is available on the Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II systems because their two-speed transfer case has Active 4-Low mode, which is engaged when Rock mode is selected. This optimizes throttle control, transmission shift points, and traction control to make crawling over rocky terrain a breeze.
